What Is a Gallbladder Evaluation?

A gallbladder evaluation is a clinical assessment designed to identify diseases affecting the gallbladder, such as gallstones, inflammation (cholecystitis), biliary dyskinesia, or bile duct obstruction. Because gallbladder disorders can cause significant abdominal discomfort, digestive symptoms, and infection, early evaluation helps confirm the diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment, which may include dietary changes, medication, or surgery.

When Is a Gallbladder Evaluation Recommended?

Assessment may be recommended for individuals experiencing:

  • Recurrent upper right abdominal pain, especially after eating
  • Nausea, vomiting, or bloating
  • Pain that radiates to the shoulder or back
  • Fever or chills associated with abdominal pain
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Fatty, oily, or light-colored stools
  • Indigestion, gas, or unexplained digestive discomfort
  • Known risk factors such as obesity, rapid weight loss, or family history of gallbladder disease

How Is a Gallbladder Evaluation Performed?

Evaluation typically begins with a medical history and physical examination, followed by imaging studies such as abdominal ultrasound to detect gallstones, inflammation, or bile duct dilation. In some cases, additional imaging such as CT, MRI, or HIDA scan is used to assess gallbladder function and bile flow. Blood tests may be ordered to evaluate liver function, infection, and inflammation. These findings help determine the severity of disease and best treatment options.

What to Expect After Testing

Most routine tests, including ultrasound and blood work, are noninvasive and require no recovery time. If a HIDA scan or imaging with contrast is performed, temporary nausea, fatigue, or mild discomfort may occur but generally resolves the same day.

What Are the Benefits of a Gallbladder Evaluation?

Key benefits include:

  • Accurate diagnosis of gallbladder disease or dysfunction
  • Identification of gallstones, infection, or obstruction
  • Prevention of complications such as pancreatitis or bile duct disease
  • Personalized treatment planning to relieve symptoms and improve digestive health
