ASTRO provides new guidance on the use of external beam radiation therapy for primary liver cancers
A new clinical guideline from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) provides guidance on the use of radiation therapy to treat adult patients with primary liver cancers using external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). Evidence-based recommendations outline indications and optimal EBRT dosing, techniques and treatment planning for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHC), with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary care. The guideline, ASTRO's first for primary liver cancers, is published in Practical Radiation Oncology.
AI-driven medical imaging may help fight against rectal cancer
Building on its successes in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to medical imaging to enhance treatment of other diseases, a Case Western Reserve University-led team next will test its approach with rectal cancer patients.

New research found that patients who used drugs prescribed to treat heartburn, acid reflux and ulcers were more likely to have smaller probing depths in the gums (the gap between teeth and gums)
What to know about surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease
There are several options for gastroesophageal reflux disease surgery. All surgeries involve narrowing or closing off the lower end of the esophagus to prevent acid reflux.
